jane has 43 cents. she has 8 coins. find the coins and the number of each that jane has.

clearly she had 3 pennies (why?) 
that leaves 5 coins to make 40 cent.
quarters aren't can't work...(why?)
...so how about 3 dimes and 2 nickels?
