The perimeter of a square must be 34 inches plus or minus 2 inches. What is the longest and the shortest length each side can be?

for a square, s=l=w so that P=2(l+w) becomes P=2(s+s)=4s
34+2:
36=4s so s=9

34-2:
32=4s so s=8
so the shortest distance is 8 in and the longest is 9 in
